Life Legacy

Arthur (A. R.) Dick Jerke, age 89, of Mitchell, died February 25, 2007 at the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 5, at 1:30 PM at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Sunday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7 PM. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery in Tripp.

Arthur Richard Dick Jerke was born on March 25,1917, near Carter, SD to Robert and Pauline (Semmler) Jerke. He moved to the Alpena area around the age of five. He attended the Kline school near Alpena and graduated from the 8th grade. He confirmed at the Mt. Olives Lutheran Church in Woonsocket, SD. He moved with his family to a farm by Parkston after the 8th grade. He later worked with his brother, Edmund in Minnesota and Iowa picking corn after which he lived on a farm near Parkston.

He was united in marriage with Helen Christine Schmidt on June 29, 1947 in Tripp, SD. They farmed by Parkston until they moved to Tripp, SD in 1949. He worked for Kern Implement in Tripp and later for Les Williams Chevrolet as a mechanic. In 1953 he moved to Mitchell and started working as a custodian for the Mitchell School District at the Senior High School for 29 years and retiring in 1982.

He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church. He enjoyed horseback riding as a child, fishing, playing cards and gardening. Two special puppies Sheba and Tiffi brought him lots of smiles, with Tiffi passing away in July of 2005.

Grateful for sharing his life are his son John and wife, Melinda of Mitchell; two daughters, Lyla Jerke, of Mitchell; and Judy Ehlers and husband Mike of Sioux Falls; two grandchildren, Paul Jerke and Amy Dorr and her husband, Greg of Mitchell and one step grandchild, Jessica McNeil and her husband Lacy of South Sioux City, Nebraska; two sisters-in law, Hilde Jerke of Mitchell, SD and Ella Schmidt of Tripp, SD; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death, by his wife, on February 10, 2005; his parents; three brothers, Edmund, Melvin and Hugo; and one sister, Clara Ware and her husband Donald.
